Role of Non Governmental Organisations….

Provoked by Yulia's earlier comment regarding how credible sustainable production is I have decided to look at what is being done to push sustainable development in the palm oil industry.

As previously mentioned the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil was established in an attempt to improve the sustainability of the palm oil industry. I believe it has achieved huge results but not without support from environmental organisations such as Friends of the Earth, Ape Alliance and Greenpeace.

This image produced by Friends of the Earth and the Ape Alliance won the Observer Food Monthly award for ethical contribution to the food industry in March 2007.

The campaign was launched in 2005 to help stop the trade in palm oil from driving orangutans into extinction.

The campaign provoked huge successes:

  • Increased global awareness of the devastating impacts of the trade in palm oil
  • Highlighted the need for a strengthening in UK company law
  • Persuaded all the remaining major UK supermarkets to join the RSPO
  • Slowed mega palm oil production in Borneo

I will now post some more images aimed to raise awareness of the damaging impact of the palm oil industry.

Notice that Orangutans are a consistent theme throughout the campaigns. Is this right? Or is it a fantastic appeal to humans sensitive side and attraction to 'fluffy' 'cute' animals? Where are the tiger and rhinos? Birds and insects??

Additionally look how frequent Nestle is featured....

  1. Haha. I enjoyed that photo. What other forms of media have these non governmental agencies used to reach the general public?
